The Don Stiernberg Trio Live
Andy Brown, who we are lucky to have playing a Koentopp Chicagoan, just shared some amazing work from a few shows with the Don Stiernberg Trio, which also includes astounding bassist, Jim Cox. Their recent broadcast at Mad Toast Live in Madison Wisconsin , was beautifully filmed and recorded. If you aren’t familiar with the trio, get ready for a very entertaining treat. Sit back, turn the good speakers on, and get ready to move your head and laugh.
As you can see in the video, these three musicians are simply incredible. If they are playing near you, go! You will laugh out loud, tap your hands and feet, and listen to some of the finest acoustic jazz around.
Three master musicians, Don Stiernberg on mandolin, Andy Brown on the oversized mandolin (acoustic guitar), and Jim Cox on giant fret-less mando-bass (upright bass), feed off of one another’s energy while showcasing their ridiculous talent. I have been lucky enough to see them perform a number of times and to say they are inspiring to watch is an understatement.
Andy Brown became a Koentopp player in 2011. We built a custom Chicagoan with a few neck specifications that made it a little different. Andy’s main instruments are an old Gibson ES-175 and a Gibson Tal Farlow, so we modeled the neck slightly around both of these instruments . This meant a guitar with a slightly shorter scale and a narrower fingerboard width and taper. Andy also wanted a softer feeling neck, something that was not shiny and sticky feeling. We decided to rub out the neck in a traditional fashion that violin and cello necks are finished. It’s been a joy to watch Andy play this guitar and hear it mature over the years.
