Hand Made Guitars by Luthier Dan Koentopp

A 2014 Chicagoan

During the year off while relocating my shop to Los Angeles, I went back to the drawing board with my guitar designs. I wanted to reassure that everything was right from the ground up. I redesigned my archings, my outlines, and other ideas. The end results are what I think to be instruments with more purpose, visually and sonicaly. This guitar was the first instrument off the bench incorporating these new ideas. Many important decisions were also made from my client’s inspiration. On this particular guitar I also experimented by increasing the width at the upper bout. I got this idea from looking at a lot of Jimmy D’Aquisto’s later guitars where he was doing the same thing. It’s hard to tell from guitar to guitar what the extra half inch adds to the sound, but I can tell you that after a few days old, I really like it.

Welcome to California! Great choice–though I would have voted for Northern rather than Southern.

So–was the new Chicagoan a commission or could it be purchase? And if so, what is the price?

    Thanks…Sam

Hmm, Really nice guitar, but It’s also looking like a really big guitar is that right or it’s because of the photography.

    best acoustic guitars

  14. admin Says:

Thanks Gary! The Chicagoan is a 17″ archtop. The upper bout on this particular instrument is a little wider than usual which is maybe what your seeing.
